With so many competing for so few slots, sometimes getting rejected isn’t a matter of doing anything in particular wrong. It’s just â€Å"great kid, but only if room† – which, of course, there isn’t. That said, there are still some specific, common reasons for why the college application process can produce less than stellar results. So if you want to know what NOT to do, I offer you the following list of 10 ways to get rejected from college. 1) Apply to too many reach schools One of the biggest traps many high-achieving applicants fall into is to assume that if they throw in lots and lots of applications to hyper-selective schools, eventually they’ll hit the bull’s eye and get accepted to one of them. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite work that way. Applying to 10 schools, each of which has a 10% overall acceptance rate, does not raise your probability of admission to 100%! In fact, unless there is something in your application that clearly sets you apart from the 40,000+ other applicants, your chances are very likely below 10%. You need to be realistic when making your college list: a few carefully considered reach schools, a few more â€Å"likelies,† and one or two backups that you can afford and that you’d willingly attend. 15 reaches and one safety is just not a smart strategy, regardless of how many APs you’ve taken. Not infrequently, strong students who haven’t been given a lot of guidance will apply to a bunch of top-20 schools and their state university, with nothing in between, and then have no choice but to attend their safety school. But it doesn’t have to be Harvard vs. Podunk State. It could also be Case Western, or the University of Pittsburgh, or Loyola. 2) Apply to schools you dont know a lot about Those â€Å"why this college?† essays are there for a reason: schools want to make sure you’ve done your homework and are a good fit for the institution. Its ok if youre undecided about a major, but there should be some alignment between your demonstrated interests in terms of your transcript, extracurriculars, and essays, and a schools offerings. If youre set on an undergrad Business major for example, you probably shouldnt be looking at schools that don’t offer one. Colleges want to be wanted (they also need to protect their yield rate). Expressing your undying love for a school won’t necessarily get you in, but if you give them signals that you’re not really interested, they’ll probably reciprocate in kind. This goes for your safety schools as well. 3) Take it easy senior year Its very tempting to give in to senioritis early, but one thing that colleges absolutely do not want to see is that youre using senior year as an excuse to slack off. If your sophomore and junior grades were borderline, a very strong showing in challenging classes first semester senior year can help push you into the admit pile; a less rigorous schedule will do the opposite. As a general rule, selective colleges like to see five core classes senior year (English, math, history, lab science, foreign language). There is some flexibility based on your interests (e.g., if you’re a prospective STEM major who has already taken an AP foreign language, you can probably drop Spanish and double up on sciences instead), but if your schedule is filled with electives like journalism instead of AP Lit and photography rather than physics, you probably wont be pleasantly surprised when April rolls around. In addition, colleges look at the trajectory of your grades as much as your GPA. Even if your overall average is high, a slip in grades during junior/senior year can be a cause for concern. Ideally, as your classes get harder, your grades should improve; a decline in academic achievement will call into question your ability to transition to a much more challenging workload in college. 4) Overestimate the importance of grades and test scores If you look at the list of factors that the most selective colleges weigh when looking at applications, youll see that most rank applicants transcripts (rigor of coursework and grades) and test scores as the most heavily weighted factors. Alas, this can be somewhat misleading. At top schools, stellar grades and scores are a minimum requirement. They will get your application looked at – they will not get you accepted. Provided you have that part down, your recommendations, essays, extracurriculars, and overall â€Å"fit† with the school will become the deciding factors. 5) Overestimate your GPA What many applicants do not realize is that most colleges will recalculate your GPA based on only your core academic classes and without extra weight for AP’s (they’ll consider the overall rigor of your classes holistically). Those A’s in gym and drama? Irrelevant. Your 3.8 might actually be more like a 3.5. 6) Assume that high scores will compensate for weak grades When colleges are willing to be flexible in terms of applicants’ statistics, it’s usually on the â€Å"scores† side – they’re usually more willing to take a chance applicants with slightly lower scores and great grades than they are on ones in the opposite situation. They know that a transcript represents achievement across a period of years, and that someone who’s done consistently well in challenging classes will probably be ok in college. On the flip side, if they see a student with 1400+ SATs and a 2-point-something GPA, their inclination will be to label that person a slacker. 7) Don’t take the essays seriously It doesnt matter whether youre a great writer – admissions officers arent expecting you to be the next Hemingway. That’s not what the essay is about (and, to be frank, most essays aren’t particularly noteworthy). What colleges do want is some basic insight into what makes you tick as a human being, as well as some reassurance that youre the sort of person your future classmates, roommates, and professors will actually want to have around for the next four years. They also want to see that you exhibit good judgment and care enough to present yourself well. What you don’t write is in some ways as important as what you do write. Colleges will admit you in spite of an unexceptional essay, but they will reject you for an extremely poor one. So: no bragging, no putting other people down, no profanity, no talking about how you’re so crippled by anxiety that you can’t leave the house without carrying the stuffed bunny your grandma gave you when you were five, no submitting things riddled with typos (if you don’t want to show your parents, at least show your English teacher), and – this should go without saying – absolutely no plagiarizing. Oh, and obey the word limits: 300 words means 300 words, not 350 or 400. Admissions officers have thousands of these things to get through. 8) Wait until the last minute to finish/submit your applications If you are racing to finish your supplements, you will almost inevitably make mistakes, and you will not have enough time to catch them. Besides, all sorts of things can go wrong if you try to submit your applications at the last minute. The Common App site can slow down, or freeze, or crash right before midnight on the day of the deadline, just as you go to hit the submit button. (Been there, seen that, never want to witness it again.) Believe me when I say that you do not want to call a bunch of admissions offices and explain that although your application is marked January 2nd, it shouldnt be counted as late because you technically submitted it on the 1st. Tip: If you can write your essays the summer before your senior year, you will be WAY ahead of the game. 9) Don’t consider your financial aid status Look, one of the unfortunate realities of college admissions in the United States is that money counts. With the exception of a relatively small number of schools that have extremely high endowments, many selective colleges cannot afford to admit an entire freshman class without taking financial aid into account. If youre a reasonably competitive but not exceptional applicant and need significant financial aid, you may get passed over. This is why the financial aid conversation should happen before you start the application process. 10) Fail to explain a lapse in grades Admissions officers know that life isn’t always perfect, and if you did have a family/medical situation during high school that caused your grades to drop temporarily, you should take advantage of the space the Common App provides to explain it. You should also make sure your guidance counselor understands the situation and is prepared to address it as well. The Struggles of Writing the Personal Statement

Does everyonehave an obvious story to write about for their personal statements? No. When you read the final essay, it might seem like the writer had it all figured it out from the start. But, the truth is almost everyone struggles with the personal statement at first. Take it from Mazoo, USC 19heres her experience:After a few minutes spent blankly staring at a blank word doc, you’d think you would come to the realization that it’s impossible to sum up the whole of a complex human being in 500 words. Well, it took me something more like a few weeks, but eventually the epiphany came. Yet even then, I had no idea what I was doing—personal statement? What could I possibly write? I’d never experienced an absolutely life-changing moment or battled my way through poignant tragedy or won a Nobel Peace Prize. Still haven’t, to be honest. So I cast prompt to the side for a while and in the end simply chose the most versatile one (about identity), crafting my own topic to fit. But let’s tell the story from the beginning: I started with abstractions, brainstorming the personal qualities and ideas I wanted to showcase: aspirations, capacity for perseverance, quirkiness, curiosity, and the like. If you’re initially unsure what exactly to write about, I think it’s actually incredibly helpful to begin this way, since as immaterial as it might seem, this provides you with some sense of direction. From there, I searched for a significant concrete experience to ground my ideas in. Significance was difficult for me to find—at first I found myself looking for heroism where there was none, essentially seeking that Nobel Peace Prize I had never even earned. I must have sat for hours at a time internally debating the single perfect topic I could expand on. It’s funny the way ideas often come to you when you’re not really intensely looking for them, though. Eventually I went on a walk one day and spontaneously thought up a perfect simple metaphor—genes—that tied in with my search for confidence, my personal characteristics, my summer research experience, and my future goals. Killing two birds with one stone? I killed four. That really seems too easy, right? Yet looking back, I think it makes sense that the best ideas pop up during times of relaxation and in environments of calm inspiration. Essentially I built the bare foundation for my personal statement—the abstract messages I wanted to convey—and then let the overarching inspiration come in its own time. Sitting there with a stumped expression won’t do you any good—take it from the girl who has wasted hours upon unproductive hours doing exactly that. If you’re stuck, go on a walk; paint a picture; do something completely unrelated that stimulates creativity. That’s what will give you the most unexpected of ideas, the ones that stand out and tie an essay together with unprecedented cohesion. Terrorists. Arabs. The fundamentalist demons of the 21st century of which we have all become so afraid. And why are we so afraid? Because they pose a threat to our established views, ethics and beliefs. With all this talk of terrorism and the other in our world, I am beginning to feel a sense of Dj vu. There seems to be a reiteration of an established pattern, repeated over and over again throughout history. It is almost as if we have been catapulted back in time, into the Puritan mentality of Salem 1692. We now have modern day witch-hunts, extended incarcerations without trial and torture instead of hangings. Anyone and everyone who fits the desired description of the dangerous other is suspected of terrorism, whether they have committed a crime or not. This issue was detailed in Arthur Millers The Crucible. There was mass hysteria about witchcraft and the devil being rampant in their society. When it spread beyond control people whom the dominant members of society disliked, and saw as different, or other were targeted and branded as witches. This resulted in hangings and various other tortures. The accused, labelled as devils or witches are the victims in this scenario. They are deprived of the right to be innocent before proven guilty. Societys fear of the devil and this desire to eliminate the threat provided the justification for the gruesome acts they committed. Unfortunately we cannot say, almost 600 years later that this mentality has disappeared from dominant societies. Rather, it has become a more established and reinforced pattern. 8-17 Fairfax Recreation Center (Internal Controls at a Fitness Center) The Fairfax Recreation Center is a neighborhood fitness center equipped with an indoor swimming pool, exercise equipment, and a running track. The Center is open seven days a week, from 8:00 A. M. to 10:00 P. M. Stationed just inside the front doors is a turnstile. An employee oversees access through the turnstile. Before anyone can enter the facility, they must either present their membership card or pay a $6 daily fee. When the employee at the turnstile collects cash for daily fees, he or she also has the visitor complete a waiver form. The employee then deposits the cash in a locked box and files the forms. At the end of each day the Recreation Center accountant collects the cash box, opens it, removes the cash, and counts it. The accountant then gives a receipt for the cash amount to the employee on turnstile duty. The accountant takes the cash to the bank each evening. The next morning, the accountant makes an entry in the cash receipts journal for the amount indicated on the bank deposit slip. Susan Porcano, the Fairfax Recreation Center General Manager, has some concerns about the internal controls over cash. However, she is concerned that the cost of additional controls may outweigh the benefits. She decides to ask the organization’s outside auditor to review the internal control procedures and to make suggestions for improvement. Assume that you are the outside auditor. Indicate weaknesses in the existing internal control system over cash admission fees and recommend one improvement for each of the weaknesses you identified. Organize your answers as follows: 9-15. Identify one or more control procedures (either general or application controls, or both) that would guard against each of the following errors or problems. a. Leslie Thomas, a secretary at the university, indicated that she had worked 40 hours on her regular time card. The university paid her for 400 hours worked that week. Apply a separation of duties control. The data processor will input the hours worked and that can be verified by the accounting manager for accuracy. Another control that can be added to this is to establish a limit in the AIS for total hours worked so that no value above that number can be inputted. The aging analysis indicated that the Grab and Run Electronics Company account was so far in arrears that the credit manager decided to cut off any further credit sales to the company until it cleared up its account. Yet, the following week, the manager noted that three new sales had been made to that company—all on credit. Utilization of administrative controls would work in this instance. When designing the IS, there should be the ability to note an account for lack of payment and temporarily suspend the account until necessary action is taken. c. The Small Company employed Mr. Fineus Eyeshade to perform all its accounts receivable data processing. Mr. Eyeshade’s 25 years with the company and his unassuming appearance helped him conceal the fact that he was embezzling cash collections from accounts receivable to cover his gambling losses at the race track. The duel observation control and separation of duties would work here. Have two people document the receivables as they come in and have Mr. , Eyeshades reconcile the accounts based off of that. d. The Blue Mountain Utility Company was having difficulty with its customer payments. The payment amounts were entered directly into a terminal, and the transaction file thus created was used to update the customer master file. Among the problems encountered with this system were the application of customer payments to the wrong accounts and the creation of multiple customer master file records for the same account. The AIS should incorporate an unfound record test and also a check digit control procedure. This will ensure that the account number being entered is correct and that no other file has been produced. e. The Landsford brothers had lived in Center County all their lives. Ben worked for the local mill in the accounts payable department, and Tom owned the local hardware store. The sheriff couldn’t believe that the brothers had created several dummy companies that sold fictitious merchandise to the mill. Ben had the mill pay for this merchandise in its usual fashion, and he wrote off the missing goods as ‘‘damaged inventory. ’’ Ben does not appear to be a manager, so there should be a separation of duties with in the accounts payable department. The documents should be prepared by Ben, but should also be verified by a manger. There should also be internal audits that would bring to light any redundancies on approving officials or names within the organization. 9-16. A high school student was able to log onto the telephone company’s computer as soon as he learned what telephone number to call. The use of biometrics wouldn’t allow the student just to know a phone number and be able to log onto computers h. The accounts receivable department sent 87 checks to the computer center for processing. No one realized that one check was dropped along the way and that the computer therefore processed only 86 checks. Who am I?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Herpes, from the ancient Greek meaning to creep or crawl, is the name of a family of viruses of which herpes simplex virus 1 and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are the most serious human pathogens. HSV-1 is normally associated with orofacial infections and encephalitis, whereas HSV-2 usually causes genital infections and can be transmitted from infected mothers to neonates. Both viruses establish latent infections in sensory neurons and, upon reactivation, cause lesions at or near point of entry into the body. While HSV-1 and HSV-2 are different viruses, under a microscope, HSV-1 and 2 are virtually identical, sharing approximately 50% of their DNA and are treated similarly. HSV-1 and HSV-2 contain a large double-stranded DNA molecule. HSV is gram negative, consists of 162 capsomers and replication takes place within the nuclei of eukaryotic cells. The HSV virion has four parts: an electrondense core containing viral DNA; an icosapentahedral capsid; a tegument-an amorphous layer of proteins that surround the capsid; and an envelope. HSV-1 and HSV-2 encode at least 84 different polypeptides. Each protein does many things, hence HSV genes can encode several hundred different functions. The objective of this project is to make a controller based model to count number of persons visiting particular room and accordingly light up the room. Here we can use sensor and can know present number of persons. In today’s world, there is a continuous need for automatic appliances with the increase in standard of living, there is a sense of urgency for developing circuits that would ease the complexity of life.Also if at all one wants to know the number of people present in room so as not to have congestion. This circuit proves to be helpful. 1. 2 Project Overview This Project â€Å"Automatic Room Light Controller with Visitor Counter using Microcontroller is a reliable circuit that takes over the task of controlling the room lights as well us counting number of persons/ visitors in the room v ery accurately. When somebody enters into the room then the counter is incremented by one and the light in the room will be switched ON and when any one leaves the room then the counter is decremented by one.The light will be only switched OFF until all the persons in the room go out. The total number of persons inside the room is also displayed on the seven segment displays. The microcontroller does the above job. It receives the signals from the sensors, and this signal is operated under the control of software which is stored in ROM. Mainly this block diagram consist of the following essential blocks. 1. Power Supply 2. Entry and Exit sensor circuit 3. AT 89S52 micro-controller 4. Relay driver circuit 1. Power Supply:- Here we used +12V and +5V dc power supply. The main function of this block is to provide the required amount of voltage to essential circuits. 12 voltage is given. +12V is given to relay driver. To get the +5V dc power supply we have used here IC 7805, which provides the +5V dc regulated power supply. 2. Enter and Exit Circuits:- This is one of the main part of our project. The main intention of this block is to sense the person. For sensing the person and light we are using the light dependent register (LDR). By using this sensor and its related circuit diagram we can count the persons. 3. 89S52 Microcontroller:- It is a low-power, high performance CMOS 8-bit microcontroller with 8KB of Flash Programmable and Erasable Read Only Memory (PEROM).The device is manufactured using Atmel’s high-density nonvolatile memory technology and is compatible with the MCS-51TM instruction set and pin out. The on-chip Flash allows the program memory to be reprogrammed in-system or by a conventional nonvolatile memory programmer. By combining a versatile 8-bit CPU with Flash on a monolithic hip, the Atmel AT89S52 is a powerful Microcontroller, which provides a highly flexible and cost effective solution so many embedded control applications. 4. Relay Driver Circuit:- This block has the potential to drive the various controlled devices.In this block mainly we are using the transistor and the relays. One relay driver circuit we are using to control the light. Output signal from AT89S52 is given to the base of the transistor, which we are further energizing the particular relay. Because of this appropriate device is selected and it do its allott ed function. CHAPTER :- 3 SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM Transmission Circuit:- Fig. 3. 1 Transmitter circuit Receiver Circuit:- Fig. 3. 2 Receiver circuit * CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION: There are two main parts of the circuits. 1. Transmission Circuits (Infrared LEDs) 2. Receiver Circuit (Sensors) . Transmission Circuit: Fig. 3. 3 Transmitter circuit This circuit diagram shows how a 555 timer IC is configured to function as a basic monostable multivibrator. A monostable multivibrator is a timing circuit that changes state once triggered, but returns to its original state after a certain time delay. It got its name from the fact that only one of its output states is stable. It is also known as a ‘one-shot'. In this circuit, a negative pulse applied at pin 2 triggers an internal flip-flop that turns off pin 7's discharge transistor, allowing C1 to charge up through R1.At the same time, the flip-flop brings the output (pin 3) level to ‘high'. When capacitor C1 as charged up to about 2/3 Vcc, t he flip-flop is triggered once again, this time making the pin 3 output ‘low' and turning on pin 7's discharge transistor, which discharges C1 to ground. This circuit, in effect, produces a pulse at pin 3 whose width t is just the product of R1 and C1, i. e. , t=R1C1. IR Transmission circuit is used to generate the modulated 36 kHz IR signal. The IC555 in the transmitter side is to generate 36 kHz square wave. Adjust the preset in the transmitter to get a 38 kHz signal at the o/p. round 1. 4K we get a 38 kHz signal. Then you point it over the sensor and its o/p will go low when it senses the IR signal of 38 kHz. 2. Receiver Circuit: Fig. 3. 4 Receiver circuit The IR transmitter will emit modulated 38 kHz IR signal and at the receiver we use TSOP1738 (Infrared Sensor). The output goes high when the there is an interruption and it return back to low after the time period determined by the capacitor and resistor in the circuit. I. e. around 1 second. CL100 is to trigger the IC555 which is configured as monostable multivibrator. Input is given to the Port 1 of the microcontroller.Port 0 is used for the 7-Segment display purpose. Port 2 is used for the Relay Turn On and Turn off Purpose. LTS 542 (Common Anode) is used for 7-Segment display. And that time Relay will get Voltage and triggered so light will get voltage and it will turn on. And when counter will be 00 that time Relay will be turned off. Reset button will reset the microcontroller. CHAPTER :- 4 HARDWARE DESIGN ; DESCRIPTIONS Hardware Design:- Infrared Sensor TSOP1738 Microcontroller AT89S52 Relay 7-Segment Display Timer IC 555 Fig. 4. 1 Snap of the entire circuit 4. 1 Procedure Followed While Designing:In the beginning I designed the circuit in DIPTRACE software. Dip trace is a circuit designing software. After completion of the designing circuit I prepared the layout. Then I programmed the microcontroller using KEIL software using hex file. Then soldering process was done. After completion of the soldering process I tested the circuit. Still the desired output was not obtained and so troubleshooting was done. The relay is used to operate the external solenoid forming part of a locking device or for operating any other electrical devices. Normally the relay remains off. As soon as pin of the microcontroller goes high, the relay operates. When the relay operates and releases. Diode D2 is the standard diode on a mechanical relay to prevent back EMF from damaging Q3 when the relay releases. LED L2 indicates relay on. And if it is interrupted then the microcontroller will increment the count and switch on the relay, if it is first time interrupted. * If the sensor 2 is interrupted first then the microcontroller will look for the sensor 1. And if it is interrupted then the microcontroller will decrement the count. * When the last person leaves the room then counter goes to 0 and that time the relay will turn off.
